Jan van Wintelroy (active from 1520–1576) was a Franco-Flemish composer and choir master of the Renaissance .

Life

Little is known about Jan van Wintelroy's family origins, the date and place of his birth or the time of his apprenticeship, as well as the year and place of his death. All that is documented is that from 1529 he was active as a singer and priest in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch with the Marienbruderschaft (Dutch: Illustre onze liewe vrouwe broederschap ) . He was appointed choirmaster on July 19, 1551 and held this position for over 20 years until June 30, 1574. After that he was still responsible for the musical intonation of the Brotherhood's band.

The collection of Dutch songs Dat ierste boeck van den nieuwe Duijtsche liedekens , published by the publisher Jacob Baethen in Maastricht in 1554, contains a four-part song by Jan van Wintelroy:

  • "Al is den tijd nu doloreus"

No complete copy of this songbook has survived; the soprano part is missing. The publisher Petrus Phalesius reissued this song in his Duijtsch musijck boeck , an anthology of Dutch songs that appeared in Leuven in 1572 .

meaning

Due to his lifetime and the style of his composition, Jan van Wintelroy belongs to the 4th generation of Franco-Flemish music.
