biography

Gibson was born in Belize and studied biology and zoology in the USA . In the mid 1980s she began volunteering for the Belize Audubon Society. Between 1985 and 1987 she fought for the establishment of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. To this end, she campaigned with citizens, entrepreneurs, fishermen and the government and informed them about the need for a protected area. She developed a management plan, worked on financing the project and brought the project forward. Their efforts were successful and the reserve was established in 1987. It was the first of its kind in Central America . The sanctuary extends for approximately three square miles. It is a protection zone that allows fish species whose population was previously considerably healthy to recover. Divers can experience a variety of different species. She won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1990 for her commitment to maintaining the Belize Barrier Reef System.

In 1988 she prepared the Glover's Reef Atoll Draft Management Plan and began efforts for Glover's Reef Conservation Status. In 1990 she helped found the Coastal Zone Management Association as part of the Fisheries Authority. Gibson joined the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). In 1993, through their efforts and support of WCS, they gained designation as a protected area of Belize. Here it became clear that it was not enough to protect individual areas, but that a plan was needed that included the protection of the entire barrier zone. This was due, among other things, to the fact that algae growth was fueled by litter from orchards, overfishing caused great damage in other areas and sedimentation through building had devastating consequences. Together with water management authorities, representatives from forestry and other groups and citizens, a plan was drawn up in 1993 to make the reef a World Heritage Site. After several years of planning and work, the designation was accepted by UNESCO in November 1996.

Gibson was the director of the Belize Wildlife Conversation Society and has published several scientific papers.
