( Borkhausen , 1792)

The Janthe Bandeule ( Noctua janthe ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae). The Janthe gang owl is one of three species of the Janthina species complex, whereby the independence of the species Noctua janthe and Noctua tertia has not yet been proven with certainty.

features

The wingspan of the moths is 38 to 45 millimeters, with the females being 39 to 45 mm on average slightly larger than the males (38 to 40 mm). The basic color of the forewings varies from light ocher to gray to brown, often with a reddish or slightly purple tint. Ring and kidney defects are not clearly marked. The underside of the forewing is colored black from the base of the wing to the wavy line. The black field ends in finger-like or pointed protrusions between the veins in the orange-brown fringe field. On the upper side of the hind wing, the inner edge of the marginal band meets the front edge almost at right angles. From there, few or no black scales extend to the black scales of the wing base.

The caterpillar is colored light brown to light brown gray. The back shows a narrow, light back line and U- to V-shaped back drawings. The younger caterpillars (L2 to L4) have dark spots on the 3rd to 5th segment in the middle of the back.

Similar species

The moths of the Janthe gang owl cannot be reliably distinguished from butterflies of the Janthina gang owl on the basis of the upper side of the forewing. In N. janthe the black band on the upper side of the hind wings is usually narrower than in N. janthina . In N. janthe, the inner edge of the marginal band meets the anterior edge almost at right angles. From there, few or no black scales extend to the black scales of the wing base. In contrast to this, in N. janthina the inner edge of the bandage mostly runs obliquely, only rarely almost at right angles to the front edge. The black scales can extend to the base of the wing. On the underside of the forewings, the black middle field is clearly more sharply delimited towards the edge field. Rounded to pointed black protrusions are often formed between the wires. In adult caterpillars of Noctua janthe , the U- to V-shaped drawing elements on the back are more clearly developed than in N. janthina . The younger caterpillars (L2 to L4) of N. janthe have dark spots in the middle of the back on the 3rd to 5th segment, which are missing in N. janthina caterpillars of the same stage.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is distributed in northwest Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) and throughout Western Europe. In the east it occurs up to and including Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, western Poland. In the north the distribution area extends to Scotland, Ireland, southern Finland, southern Norway and southern Sweden. Recently it was also reported from the Don area (southern Russia). The species colonizes open biotopes.

Way of life

The Janthe Bandeule forms one generation per year, the moths of which fly from July to September. The moths are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources. You visit flowers and come to the bait . As larval food plants are blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ) and dogwood ( Cornus sanguinea ) specified. Like other Noctua species, the caterpillars climb shrubs and bushes. The caterpillars overwinter.

Danger

In the Red List Germany it is listed as a problem type with insufficient data.
