Januarius Aloysius MacGahan ( June 12, 1844 - June 9, 1878 ) was an American journalist . As a war correspondent for the English newspaper "Daily News", he informed the European public for the first time about the atrocities committed by the Turkish army in the suppression of the Bulgarian April uprising of 1876 . MacGahan is seen as the “Liberator of Bulgaria” because of his reporting, especially in Bulgaria. A school in Sofia is named after him, the city of Elena has erected a monument to him, and several cities each named a street after him.

The MacGahan Festival is held each June in his hometown of New Lexington , Ohio .
