The Japanese Noctule ( Nyctalus furvus ) is a bat in the genus Noctule described in 1968 by Yoshinori Imaizumi and Mizuko Yoshiyuki. Various authors temporarily listed them as a subspecies or population of the noctule bat ( Nyctalus noctula ). It has been recognized as a species since the early 2000s.

Only a few observations have been documented for the species. It occurs in four separate populations in the northern part of the Japanese island of Honshū . Furthermore, a bat caught in South Korea in 2009 could be identified as a specimen of the Japanese noctule based on the matching morphology of the skull, teeth and penis bones . Original forests serve as habitat.

The Japanese noctule bat is a small representative of the noctule bat. The Korean specimen had a head-torso length of about 70 mm, a forearm length of 48.5 mm and a tail length of about 42 mm. The fur on the upper side varies between dark brown, yellow-brown and gold-colored, the underside is generally lighter. As with the other noctule bat, the tail is well developed. The head is characterized by widely separated ears and small eyes.

Groups of these bats mainly rest in tree hollows. A wintering colony was found in a building. It is also believed that the species catches flying insects like other noctule bats such as beetles, moths or flying ants.

New planting of arable land, coniferous forests in monoculture and of residential areas and the associated deforestation of the original forests lead to a decline in the population. Some forests in the distribution area are designated as nature reserves. The IUCN lists the Japanese noctule as endangered ( vulnerable ).
