The Japanese Garden Interlaken , also known as the Garden of Friendship , was built in 1995 and is located near Interlaken Castle and the Catholic Church. The Japanese garden is a gift from the city of Ōtsu to its twin city Interlaken . The partnership between the two cities has existed since 1978. When it was built, it was the first public Japanese garden in Switzerland.

Creation

To create the garden, the city of Ōtsu sent landscape architects and gardeners to Interlaken to build the garden together with Swiss experts. A total of 380 tons of stone blocks were used and shaped and positioned according to the rules of Japanese horticulture.

Composition and symbolism

The Japanese garden of Interlaken refers to its surroundings and symbolizes the mountains of the Bernese Oberland with its waterfalls and gorges. The Shinji pond represents Lake Brienz and Lake Thun . Its islands show the crane and turtle, which in Japan remain young and embody long life . The numbers five and three, which play an important role in Buddhist teaching, appear often. The number three can be seen in the trees and bushes that the Japanese gardeners always planted in threes, which is a symbol of calm and unity . According to his plaque, Ōtsu wants to remind the people of Interlaken of the landscape on Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains and at the same time convey his love for nature worldwide.
