Jarl Waldemar Lindeberg

Jarl Waldemar Lindeberg (born August 4, 1876 in Helsinki ; † December 12, 1932 there ) was a Finnish mathematician.

Life

Lindeberg was the son of a lecturer at the Helsinki Polytechnic .

After finishing school, Lindeberg studied at the university in his hometown. He dealt with partial differential equations from an early age and by 1920 at the latest he found his focus in probability theory and statistics .

In 1920 Lindeberg was also able to publish its central limit theorem ( Lindeberg theorem or central limit theorem by Lindeberg-Feller ). Without knowing the research of Alexander Mikhailovich Lyapunov , he came to similar results ( Lindeberg condition , Lyapunow condition ).

The Swedish mathematician Harald Cramér met Lindeberg in 1922 and reported on this encounter:

“When he was reproached for not being sufficiently active in his scientific work, he said 'well, I am a farmer'. And if somebody happended to say that his farm was not properly cultivated, his answer was 'of course my real job is to be a professor'. I was very fond of him and saw him often during the following years. "

Jarl Waldemar Lindeberg died at the age of 56 on December 12, 1932 in Helsinki, where he found his final resting place.
