from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaromír Šámal (born July 12, 1900 in Prague ; † June 5, 1942 ibid) was a Czech lecturer and professor of entomology at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He was executed as a resistance fighter in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia .

Life

Jaromír Šámal was the son of Přemysl Šámal and Anna Šámalová. He studied zoology and devoted himself in particular to the study of insects, especially his specialty areas Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera , partly together with his wife Milada Šámalová. He taught as a lecturer and later as a professor at the Technical University in Prague.

After the German occupation of the country and the closure of Czech universities in March 1939, Šámal was dismissed from the university. Like his father, he devoted himself to resisting National Socialism . According to a protocol from the Prague Gestapo office, the Gestapo succeeded in arresting the members of the illegal “Revoluční národní výbor české inteligence” (Revolutionary National Committee of the Czech Intelligence) as well as other intellectuals from its vicinity, including Jaromír Šámal and numerous others Scientist. Šámal was executed on June 5, 1942.

His wife Milada Šámalová was arrested when she asked the Gestapo about her husband (the death certificate was not issued until a few days later) and deported to Auschwitz (she survived and returned to Prague); the two children, Jiří (nine years old) and Alena (five years old) were deported to an internment camp for children near Łódź in Poland and then given to a German family in Germany for re-education. According to unconfirmed reports, a stumbling block was laid for Jaromír Šámal and his wife Milada Šámalová in Prague.
