Jarousseau, the pastor of the desert ( French Jarousseau, le pasteur du désert ) is an edifying book by Eugène Pelletan , a republican journalist, deputy, Paris senator and minister of the 3rd republic. The book tells the life of his great-grandfather Jean Jarousseau (* December 25, 1729 in Mainxe, † 1819 in Semussac), who came from the parish of Mainxe-en-Angoumois . In 1761 he went to hold the post of pastor of the "desert" (= diaspora) in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne . In 1767 he married Anna Lavocat. They had seven children together.

Franz Eugen Schlachter did not write this ecclesiastical treatise personally, such as the writings Herod I, called the Great (1897) and The Gospel of the Reformation at the Bern Reformation Discussion of 1528 (1910), but translated this text from French. He first published the story in his newspaper, the Brosamen von des Herr Tisch, as a series of articles, followed by a printed booklet that tells of the struggles of the persecuted community. Together with “Pater Chiniquy” and “The Gospel of the Reformation at the Bern Reformation Discussion of 1528”, or the lecture “What do we owe the Reformation”, this includes all of Schlächter's work on the Reformation and its debates. Schlachter always had a lucky hand to choose a short presentation or to write it himself, so that the reader - without having to familiarize himself with it - quickly gets an overview of the topic.

It is the harrowing story of the persecuted church of Jesus in France. Despite the tragic and painful story, there is also something humorous in the work. The story of the extraordinary wedding of Jarousseau, his intelligent horse named "Misere", is reported. In the end he even went to the king in Paris to pray for the persecuted community. He survives all dangers, experiences amazing preservation and ultimately the care of God and goes home in peace in his 90th year of life.
