Jason Azzopardi

Jason Azzopardi (born March 16, 1971 in Pietà ) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party , was briefly a member of the European Parliament (MEP) and is currently Parliamentary State Secretary.

Life

After attending school, he completed a law degree and was admitted to the notary public in 1994. In 1996 he completed his studies eventually with the promotion to Doctor of Law from (LL.D.). At the same time, he completed an additional course in financial services at the University of Malta with the academic degree Master of Arts (MA Financial Services). He then worked as a lawyer, specializing in criminal law.

At the age of 18, he joined the Nationalist Party (PN) in 1989 and held various positions within the party organization. In 1999 he became secretary of the PN for international affairs and held this office until May 2004.

In the parliamentary elections in 1998 he was elected as a candidate for the Partit Nazzjonalista for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives, after he had not received a mandate two years earlier. In 2003 and 2008 he was re-elected as a member of parliament and last represented constituency 4 . Between 2003 and 2008 he was chairman of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and a member of the so-called Privileges Parliamentary Committee. He was also chairman of the delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly .

After Malta's accession to the European Union (EU) , he was briefly representative of Malta in the European Parliament from May 1 to July 19, 2004, where he represented the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats on the committees for regional policy, transport and Tourism and fishing.

After the Partit Nazzjonalista won the parliamentary elections in Malta in 2008 , Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi appointed him Parliamentary State Secretary for Taxes and State Property to the Minister of Finance, Economy and Investment, Tonio Fenech , on March 12, 2008 .
