The Jasper County Courthouse is the judicial and administrative building ( courthouse ) of Jasper County in Newton , Iowa . It was built in 1909–1911 and in 1981 was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
history
It was first held in Jasper County in 1846. At that time, the meetings took place in a resident's log cabin. The first purpose built courthouse was built of wood in 1847. It was five and a half by nine meters tall and cost $ 87.50 to build (today's prices: $ 2,798). This building was later moved to a farm that was closer to Newton. A second courthouse was built in 1857 from limestone and brick , with construction $ 26,600 (today's prices: $ 802,000). In 1911 the third courthouse, built from 1909 in the Beaux Arts style , was inaugurated; it is still used today. This building was also made of limestone, but the window and door panels are made of wood. General and politician James B. Weaver wrote of the Courthouse in his 1912 History of the County Courthouse: "Long after the pages of this county history are worn out and yellowed with age, this building will, by all human judgment, remain in all its glory."
Building
The building is 37 m long and 24.5 m wide. The clock tower on the building is almost 43 m high. The clock inside was installed with money from private donors. The interior of the building is tiled with ceramics and equipped with marble. It was renovated in 1986.
