Jayavarman VIII.
Jayavarman VIII was a Khmer king in the kingdom of Angkor from 1243 to 1295 .
Life
During his reign he had to fend off several invasions by the Thai of the Sukhothai Empire .
Towards the end of his reign, the threat from the Mongols became a major concern of his. In 1280 the ruler of Annam called the Mongolian ( Yuan Dynasty ) Emperor of China , Kublai Khan , for help against the Khmer. This sent an army that could be repulsed just before Angkor, but Jayavarman VIII agreed to pay tribute.
During his reign there was a violent Hindu reaction to Buddhism , as it had been propagated especially by King Jayavarman VII . This took on the dimensions of an iconoclasm - in many cases one sees scraped-off Buddhist representations in the temples of Angkor, for example in Ta Prohm or Preah Palilay . A Buddha statue that had been placed in the Bayon was found destroyed in a well in the 1930s. In the bayon it had been replaced by a statue of Harihara . Construction activities of importance are not known from Jayavarman's VIII reign.
