Jean-André Valletaux

Jean-André Valletaux (born November 23, 1773 in Hiersac , † June 23, 1811 at Cogorderos ) was a French général de brigade .

Life

Valletaux became a supporter of Napoleon early on and joined him during the Revolutionary Wars . He was able to distinguish himself several times through bravery and was also promoted very quickly.

On July 16, 1795 he acted as commander in the battle near Plouharnel and in the battle for Quiberon against the army of emigrants .

He came to the staff of Marshal Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult with the rank of general and was involved in the Napoleonic Wars in Spain . He fought at Buçaco (September 27, 1810) and at Gévora (February 19, 1811). He was lightly wounded in the battle of Fuentes de Oñoro (May 3-5 , 1811) and fatally wounded in the battle of Cogorderos (June 23, 1811).

He died the same day and was buried on the edge of the battlefield on the banks of the Orvigo. His tombstone was inscribed:
Ci-git un général couronné par la gloire
et qui dans les combats ne fait jamais vaincu.
Passer-by, de Valletaux respecte la mémoire
il mourut en héros comme il avait vécu.
