Jean-Baptiste Eugène Bellier de la Chavignerie (born January 28, 1819 in Chartres , † September 25, 1888 in Évreux ) was a French entomologist . He specialized in butterflies.

Life

Bellier de Chavignerie worked in the Paris Ministry of Justice from 1844, first as an attaché, then as an expéditionnaire and editor . In 1859 he took his leave. During his time at the Ministry of Justice, he went to the Bois de Boulogne every evening after work, accompanied by his wife and daughter, to catch butterflies. In 1870 he moved to Évreux.

In addition, he was already involved in nature observation and insects as a teenager, encouraged by his grandfather Marchand, who was a butterfly collector (and his uncle Armand Marchand, who was an ornithologist). At first he collected beetles, later only butterflies. In addition to collecting in the Paris area, he also collected in Sicily, Corsica, the Alps, the Auvergne and the Pyrenees. His butterfly and beetle collection was acquired by Charles Oberthür after his death in 1889 .

He also sold insects during his lifetime. In 1857 he was president of the French entomological society ( Société entomologique de France ).
