Jean-Daniel Gerber (born August 29, 1946 in Bern ) is a Swiss economist and former State Secretary and Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) .

Life

J.-D. Gerber grew up speaking German and French and studied economics (lic. Rer. Pol). In 2008, the Economic and Social Sciences awarded him the University of Bern , the honorary doctorate .

During his career in the service of the Swiss Confederation, he worked in numerous different areas: in the then Federal Office for Foreign Trade (BAWI), in Geneva as the Swiss representative at UNCTAD and the WTO, in Washington as head of the economic and financial services in the Swiss embassy and then as Executive Director and Dean of the Board of the World Bank (1993–1997). In November 1997 the Federal Councilor entrusted Jean-Daniel Gerber with the management of the Federal Office for Refugees and, as State Secretary 2004–2011, with the management of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO.

Jean-Daniel Gerber currently holds various mandates: He chairs the Board of Directors of SIFEM (Swiss Investment Fund for Emerging Markets) and is a member of the Board of Directors of Lonza Group AG. He presides over the “Schweizerische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft SGG” and the associations “Swiss Sustainable Finance” and “Reintegration im Heimatland”.

He is married to Elisabeth Gerber-Graber and has two grown children.
