Pelt received his doctorate in pharmacology in Nancy in 1959 and taught botany and pharmacy as a professor ( Maître de conférences ) in Nancy from 1962 and in Metz from 1972, where he retired in 1993. One focus of his research was ethnopharmacology , for which he was on field studies in Togo , the Ivory Coast , Morocco , Syria , Iraq , Yemen and Afghanistan . In Metz in 1971 he founded the Institut Européen d' É cologie (IEE) and was its director. He realized his ideas for natural urban development (propagated in his book L'Homme re-naturé from 1977) in parks in Metz in the 1970s.

Numerous popular science books on botany and other areas of biology, pharmacy, ecology and environmental protection come from Pelt. He emerged as a critic of genetic engineering and tried to combine science and Christian faith.

In 1995 he became a knight and in 2005 an officer of the Legion of Honor . In 1997 he became an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite .

From 1971 to 1983 he was on the council of Metz and he was deputy mayor ( maire-adjoint ) under the mayor Jean-Marie Rausch. Pelt was a friend of Robert Schuman's and wrote his biography.
