Jean Barbault
Jean Barbault (born August 1, 1718 in Viames , † May 5, 1762 in Rome ) was a French painter and graphic artist.
Life
Jean Barbault was born in Viames in 1718. He studied under Jean Restout the Younger at the Académie Royale in Paris . In 1745 he won the Prix de Rome and in early 1747 went to Italy, where he stayed until the end of his life. In Rome he studied at the Académie de France from 1749 to 1753. When he married Chiara Leorenzini in 1753, he was expelled from the Académie because a marriage was against the rules. Barbault died in Paris in 1762, leaving behind a 37-year-old widow with three children.
Works (selection)
In addition to his paintings, the best-known of which are An Islamic Legal Scholar and Sultana (1748, both in the Louvre ) and The Four Continents (1751, Musée des Besançon ), Barbault is also known above all for his etchings on archaeologically interesting places ( Les plus beaux Monuments de Rome ancienne and two other series).
In 1974/75 a collection exhibition with around 30 paintings was organized in Beauvais .
