Jean Birelle (* in Limoges ; † January 6, 1361 ) was a French Carthusian monk and between 1346 and 1361 Prior of the Grande Chartreuse and Minister General of the Carthusian Order .

He entered the Glandier Charterhouse and became prior in Bonnefoy. In 1346 he was elected Prior of the Grande Chartreuse and General Minister of the Carthusian Order. He held this office until his death.

Birelle was well known for a contemplative religious. After the death of Pope Clement VI. was elected on December 18, 1352 Étienne Aubert to his successor. This took the name Innocent VI. on. During the conclave , according to some sources, some cardinals are said to have proposed Birelle as Pope. According to others, convinced Cardinal De Talleyrand-Perigord, the other cardinals of the non-election, calling them the example of Celestine V. recalled. Birelle was distinguished by great virtue and holiness, but is said to have been unable to lead the Church. Innocent VI. thanked Birelle for not accepting the election by offering him the appointment of cardinal. But this refused. The Pope subsequently promoted the Carthusian Order and founded the Carthusian monastery of Notre-Dame-du-val-de-Bénédiction in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon .
