Jean Cousin (* around 1490 in Soucy near Sens ; † around 1560/61 in Paris ) was a French painter and graphic artist.

Life

Jean Cousin, born around 1490 in Soucy near Sens, began his career in his hometown. He studied glass painting with Jean Hympe and Grassot. In 1530 he finished work on the stained glass windows of Sens Cathedral , which depict the legend of Saint Eutropius . He also designed windows for locks around Sens.

Around 1540 Jean Cousin moved to Paris, where he continued his career as a glass painter and created his most famous work, the windows of the castle chapel in Vincennes Castle . He also created templates for tapestries and painted oil paintings. Jean Cousin is also known as a graphic artist and book illustrator.

Jean Cousin the Elder enjoyed an international reputation during his lifetime and is one of the most important exponents of French Renaissance painting. His son Jean Cousin the Younger was also active as a painter, sculptor and graphic artist.
