Jean Karat (* 1949 in Qamishli ; † December 7, 2003 ) was an Aramaic folk singer and artist.
Jean Karat was born in the northern Syrian city of Qamishli in 1949. He is one of the most important singers in Aramaic music. He grew up in Qamishli and began to sing with other well-known Aramaic singers such as Farid Youssef, Elias Karam (Domit) and Jalil Maiilo as a teenager .
Songs like Hesh Ono Z 'ouro (composed and sung with Farid Youssef) are among his first musical works to be heard in the Aramaic-speaking world of music. In the 1970s Jean Karat composed songs such as O Zamoro , Halyo yo ou yawmano , Lema A 'mekh and Mena' mouthi rhimoli , which are among his most successful.
In addition to numerous Aramaic songs, Karat is also known for its songs in Arabic . Jean Karat was not only musically active - he also enjoyed painting and writing. His calligraphies in Aramaic script, which today decorate numerous Aramaic churches and organizational buildings (most of them in Qamishli), became particularly well known . Karat died on December 7, 2003 at the age of 54. His son Fadi is also a musician.
