Jean Karat (* 1949 in Qamishli ; † December 7, 2003 ) was an Aramaic folk singer and artist.

Jean Karat was born in the northern Syrian city ​​of Qamishli in 1949. He is one of the most important singers in Aramaic music. He grew up in Qamishli and began to sing with other well-known Aramaic singers such as Farid Youssef, Elias Karam (Domit) and Jalil Maiilo as a teenager .

Songs like Hesh Ono Z 'ouro (composed and sung with Farid Youssef) are among his first musical works to be heard in the Aramaic-speaking world of music. In the 1970s Jean Karat composed songs such as O Zamoro , Halyo yo ou yawmano , Lema A 'mekh and Mena' mouthi rhimoli , which are among his most successful.

In addition to numerous Aramaic songs, Karat is also known for its songs in Arabic . Jean Karat was not only musically active - he also enjoyed painting and writing. His calligraphies in Aramaic script, which today decorate numerous Aramaic churches and organizational buildings (most of them in Qamishli), became particularly well known . Karat died on December 7, 2003 at the age of 54. His son Fadi is also a musician.
