from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Kerléo (born February 24, 1932 in Guiclan ) is a French perfumer and founder of the Osmothèque fragrance archive in Versailles .

Life

Jean Kerléo was born in Guiclan in the Finistère department in 1932, the son of a farmer. He began his career in 1955 with the cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubinstein . For his work as a perfumer at Rubinstein, he was awarded the Prix International du Parfumeur-Créateur of the Société Française des Parfumeurs in 1965.

In 1967 he moved to Jean Patou as a perfumer and technical director . At Patou, Kerléo created perfumes such as 1000 , Ma Liberté , Voyageur and Sublime .

From 1976 to 1979 Kerléo was President of the Société Française des Parfumeurs. There he proposed to the members to implement an archive for odors. He pursued the project against numerous opposition over the next two decades. Many companies and perfumers had reservations about entrusting their secret formulas to an archive.

In the 1980s, Kerléo succeeded in reproducing perfumes from the House of Patou that were no longer available. In 1986, his team received several formulas from the estate administrator of the former perfume manufacturer F. Millot, including that of the no longer available classic Crêpe de Chine by perfumer Jean Desprez from 1925.

Only with the support of Gérard Delcour, President of the Comité Français du Parfum (CFP), and Didier Simond, President of the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Versailles-Val-d'Oise-Yvelines, was Kerléo finally able to realize the project. The Osmothèque was opened on April 26, 1990 in Versailles. Kerléo led the Osmothèque until 2008 and then handed over the management to Patricia de Nicolaï .
