Jean Baptiste Octave Landry de Thézillat

Jean Baptiste Octave Landry de Thézillat (born October 10, 1826 in Limoges , † October 1865 in Auteuil ) was a French doctor and neurologist.

In 1859 he described Landry's paralysis , named after him , a form of paralysis that begins on the legs, gradually spreads further upwards and either regresses in the opposite order or leads to fatal respiratory or swallowing paralysis.

Life

Jean Landry studied medicine in Paris, where he initially worked at the hospitals Hôtel Dieu and Hôpital Beaujon . He received his doctorate in 1854. As head of a hydrotherapy institute (Établissement hydrothérapeutique) in Auteuil, he dealt with nervous diseases. In 1859 Landry published ten cases of Landry's paralysis and the first volume of his Traité complet des paralysies , in which he described three types of nerve paralysis (1: ascending, without sensory symptoms, 2: ascending with simultaneous numbness, 3: generalized with sensory aberrations) . Landry was an avid alpinist, geologist and crystallographer. He had given up his academic career, which would have been possible for him in Paris, in favor of his marriage. He died of cholera as a respected neurologist.
