Jean Louis Cayart

Jean Louis Cayart , also known as Ludwig Cayart (* 1645 in La Capelle; † April 30, 1702 in Berlin ) was a French architect and engineer .

Cayart was a student of the French fortress builder Vauban . As a religious refugee, he entered the Brandenburg service in 1692 (or as early as 1687) and was included in the lists of the electoral army with the rank of major. In 1795 he is said to have become chief engineer. For the elector he was instrumental in the expansion of the fortresses Wesel , Küstrin , Driesen , Kolberg  and Magdeburg a . a. involved. He rose to the rank of colonel in the army.

In Berlin he was also involved in civil buildings. He worked with Johann Arnold Nering from 1692 to 1695 on the new construction of the Long Bridge . According to his plans, the French Friedrichstadtkirche was built for the religious refugees. Begun in 1701, construction was continued by Abraham Quesnay (1666–1756) after Cayart's death and completed in 1705.
