biography
Jean Renggli the Elder was the son of Johann Georg Renggli and Maria Anna Bütler from the Bütler family of artists. After Renggli finished school, he began an apprenticeship in an architecture office in Neuchâtel . Finally he decided to become an artist and attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . After completing his training, he traveled to London and Rome, where he then joined the Swiss Guard for financial reasons, among other things . Nevertheless, he finished his studies at the Accademia di San Luca with a master class certificate.
In 1871 Jean Renggli returned to Lucerne, where he opened a shop and studio as a painter, photographer and art dealer at a prestigious location opposite the Hotel National. In 1872 he married Rosa Josefina Pfluger and had two sons and four daughters. In addition to his work in the studio and in the studio, he taught at the boys' school in Lucerne from 1875. There he met Eduard Renggli, who later founded Lucerne stained glass (to whom he was not related). He promoted this for several years. He found his final resting place in the Friedental cemetery .
