Jean Restout the Elder (born November 15, 1666 in Caen , † October 20, 1702 in Rouen ) was a French painter.

Life

Jean Restout the Elder comes from a well-known family of artists and was tutored by his father Marguerin Restout . He married Magdeleine Jouvenet from a well-known family of artists based in Rouen. His style is so similar to that of his brother-in-law Jean Jouvenet that it is difficult to tell their images apart.

Jean Restout died young, leaving behind a son who would become the most famous painter of the Restout family of artists, Jean Restout the Younger .
