Jean Rotz

Jean Rotz (* around 1505; † 1560 ), also called Johne Rotz , was a French artist cartographer of the 16th century. He had a Scottish father and a French mother.

Career

Rotz was a member of the Dieppe card school. He may have accompanied Jean Parmentier to Sumatra in 1529 and definitely went to Brazil in 1539 . His work was heavily influenced by this early French exploration, which led him to create very decorative maps.

Since he was not employed by King Francis I , he went to England in 1542 and entered the service of Henry VIII .
