Life

Jean Taffin was born the son of a legal scholar and council pensioner . This enabled him to receive spiritual training in his youth. In 1554 he became librarian and secretary to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle . Around 1557 Taffin ended his employment and went to Antwerp , where he had contacts with the forbidden Calvinist community. As the persecution of the Calvinists increased, Taffin left the Netherlands. In the following years he traveled through Europe. From 1561 Taffin settled in Metz as a Calvinist preacher. In 1567 he was called to a preaching position in Antwerp, but only a few weeks later returned to Metz. Due to political turmoil, Taffin went to Heidelberg in 1569.

Together with Petrus Dathenus , he organized the first national synod of the Dutch Calvinists in 1571 , the Synod of Emden . In the fall of 1573 Taffin left Heidelberg and entered the service of Wilhelm III . He sent him several times to Germany as an emissary . Taffin also organized the synods in Dordrecht (1574 and 1578) and in Middelburg (1581). In 1583 he finished his service at court and then worked as a preacher in Antwerp, Emden, Haarlem and Amsterdam.
