Jean Titelouze

Jean (Jehan) Titelouze (* 1563 in Saint-Omer ; † October 24, 1633 in Rouen ) was a French organist and composer .

He was trained as an organist in his birthplace and in Douai and worked in Rouen from 1585 , where he was promoted to canon in 1610.

He is also known as the founder of French organ music as he was one of the first to create music specifically for this instrument. This marked the beginning of the separation of organ music and music for other keyboard instruments.

He also became known as an improviser and theorist, his best-known work was his collection Hymnes de l'Eglise .
