Jeffrey Lyman is an American bassoonist and music teacher.

Lyman studied at Temple University with Bernard Garfield and received his Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan , where he was a student of Richard Beene and Hugh Cooper . He initially taught at Arizona State University and Bowling Green State University , and has been Professor of Bassoon at the University of Michigan since 2006. He also gave master classes a. a. at McGill University , Curtis Institute , Eastman School , Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Florida State University, and Rice University .

As a bassoonist, Lyman has performed with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra , the Opera Company of Philadelphia , the Savannah Symphony Orchestra , the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra and has participated in international festivals, among others. a. the Moscow Autumn Festival , the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, the Académie Européene d'Été de Musique in Tournon, the Colorado Music Festival , the Vermont Mozart Festival and the Bellingham Music Festival . He appeared regularly at the conferences of the International Double Reed Society . Together with the oboist Martin Schuring , he hosted the 1998 conference.

Lyman's particular interest is new music. He gave composition commissions a. a. to Yuri Kasparov , John Steinmetz , John Allemeier , David Gompper , Bill Douglas and Kathryn Hoover and contributed with his article After Shostakovich, What Next? helps to make the works of contemporary composers from Moscow internationally known. He also wrote articles on the compositions of Igor Stravinsky and Joseph Canteloube , the building of the bassoon in the 19th century and a biography of the bassoonist Gérard Faisandier . Lyman's CD recordings have been released by Summit , Le Chant du Monde , New World , Brasswell , Koch International and BlockM .
