Jeffrey S. Moore

Jeffrey Scott Moore (* 1962 in Joliet , Illinois) is an American chemist ( organic chemistry , macromolecular chemistry , supramolecular chemistry ). He is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

Life

Moore received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1984 and received his PhD there in 1989 with Samuel I. Stupp . As a post-doctoral student , he was an NSF Fellow at Caltech and then an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan . Since 1993 he has been a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is there at the Beckman Institute and the Frederick Seitz Material Research Lab. He is the Murchison-Mallory Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Materials Science.

He is engaged in the synthesis of new supramolecular systems and polymers , including self-healing polymers . He is a pioneer in the field of mechanochemistry . He looks at mechanophores , components of polymers that respond to mechanical stress. Examples are materials that absorb and dissipate energy shock waves from explosions or that trigger polymerization (or depolymerization) when stressed or release catalytically active acids.

In this context, he and his group are also developing materials that increase the service life of electronic components (e.g. in batteries) and polymers.

He is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society . In 2008 he was honored with admission to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 2017 with admission to the National Academy of Sciences . For 2020 Moore was awarded the ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry .
