Jem Ward

Jem Ward (born December 26, 1800 , † April 3, 1884 in Liverpool ) was a British boxer of the bare knuckle era.

He turned pro in 1815 at the age of 15 and remained undefeated for seven years. In 1822 he was banned from the Pugilistic Society for a postponed fight as the first boxer in history after being knocked out against Bill Abbott. In 1823, however, he was pardoned again. In 1825 he won the title against Tom Cannon with ease and was English champion from 1825 to 1831 with a brief interruption in 1827. In 1827 he was defeated by Peter Crawley , who resigned immediately. Ward then won the vacant crown and held it until he retired in 1831.

In 1995, Ward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
