Jens Raben

Jens Peter Raben (born March 14, 1880 in Toftlund , † February 18, 1960 in Sønderborg ) was a Danish prehistorian and museum director .

Life

Jens Raben was a son of the father of the same name (1847-1880) and his wife Mathilde, née Hoyer (1852-1896). The Raben family went back to the old Mecklenburg family of ravens to pieces from Steinfeld . Three generations lived on Stenderupgaard near Kolding . Some family members served as officers in regiments in Denmark and Holstein.

Jens Raben learned the trade of bookseller in Hadersleben . Afterwards he worked for the publishing house Martin from Christiansfeld and for publishers in Copenhagen . He traveled to Svalbard, Italy and North Africa and drew a lot during that time. In 1908 he got a job as the editorial secretary of the Sonderburger Zeitung .

Raben was married to Elisabeth Brigitte Margarethe Sissek (1885–1967), with whom he had a daughter.

Working as an archaeologist and in a museum

Museum in Sønderborg

Like the mother on his father's side, Elisabeth Raben from Tyrstrup , Raben was interested in history. Professor Johanna Mestorf encouraged him to undertake archaeological excavations on Als . Together with a doctor friend of his, he created the Sønderborg Local History Museum over many years, which is now located in Sønderborg Castle . It was one of the largest provincial museums in Denmark. For this he received the Dannebrogden . He was also involved in nature conservation.

Raben published extensively and provided his treatises with drawings. Many of his writings appeared as yearbooks for the museum in Sønderborg.
