Jeong Sophia ( 정 소피아 ; born August 18, 1993 ) is a South Korean skeleton pilot . She took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics for South Korea .
Career
Sophia Jeong started skeleton in 2013 and is trained by Jinho Song. She made her debut on November 21, 2014 in the Skeleton North American Cup , finishing twelfth on the Calgary track . In the 2016/17 season she was able to achieve her first podium in the North American Cup. In Calgary on November 13, 2016, she finished third behind Madison Charney from Canada and Joclyn Narracott from Australia. A day later she was able to take third place again in the second competition in Calgary, this time behind her compatriot Rayoung Mun and the Canadian Madison Charney. On January 12, 2017, she made her debut in the Intercontinental Skeleton Cup and finished ninth in the Calgary competition.
Her best placement to date in the Intercontinental Cup was achieved in the 2017/18 season, on November 13, 2018 in Calgary. In this competition, she took eighth place. This season she also made her debut in the Skeleton World Cup and was able to take 25th place in her debut on November 18, 2017 on the track in Park City . Shortly afterwards, she was able to take her first and so far only victory in the North American Cup on the same track. She secured victory in this competition ahead of the two Chinese women Danxia Yang and Chengfeng Long . During the season she also qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and finished fifteenth in the skeleton competition after a total of four runs.
She achieved her best result to date in the Skeleton World Cup on December 9, 2018 and was able to achieve 15th place in the competition on the track in Sigulda . At the end of the 2018/19 season, she finished 22nd in the overall World Cup, her best result so far.
