Life

Karin Witte studied fabric design, painting, drawing and etching technology for 12 semesters at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts .

In 1974 she received the Edwin Scharff Prize . From 1978 to 1987 she worked as a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the field of design. In 1981 she opened her private painting school in Hamburg. A year later Karin Witte was accepted into the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg .

On her 80th birthday, the Cismar Monastery dedicated a large exhibition to her from April 14th to October 20th, 2019 under the title: Sometimes we dance .

The announcement said: The works of Karin Witte are like a journey into the individual perception of the Hamburg artist. Their view of the world is spontaneous, their observation is spurred on by the unexpected and is sometimes unexpected. In her paintings Karin Witte oscillates between figuration and abstraction. The way you work moves between spontaneity and calculation and is sometimes like dancing.

Karin Witte's works can be found in private and public collections: Cultural Authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of Culture of Schleswig-Holstein Kiel, Museum for Art and Cultural History of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, Museum Quarter St. Annen , Hamburger Kunsthalle , Dresden State Art Collection ( Kupferstich-Kabinett ) , Collection Hapag-Lloyd AG Hamburg.

Karin Witte lives and works in Hamburg.

reception

“Karin Witte has created her own imagery, a formal language of figurations and symbols that are justified in themselves. In doing so, the painter has found certain condensed forms and signs that are repeatedly worked on over a long period of time and thus often recur in her motifs. "

- Jens E. Howoldt

"They overshadow, overlap and mystify one another: levels and layers play an important role in the seemingly abstract work of the Hamburg artist Karin Witte."

- Julika Pohle
