Jerónimo Baía

Frei Jerónimo Baía (* between 1620 and 1630 in Coimbra , Portugal ; † 1688 in Viana do Castelo , Portugal) was a Portuguese Baroque lyricist , religious and religious historian. He is considered one of the most important baroque poets in Portugal.

Frei Jerónimo Baía was born in Coimbra between 1620 and 1630. He was ordained on May 4, 1643 and then studied in Coimbra and Lisbon . He then went to the São Martinho do Tibães Monastery in Braga , where he worked until his death. As a teacher and preacher he was also at the court of King Dom Alfonsos VI. active.

In 1674 he worked as a chronicler for the Benedictine order in Portugal. He was also the official court poet of the king.

His poetry appeared mainly in the two well-known baroque anthologies Fénix Renascida and Postilhão de Apolo . His most famous poems were: A um pé pequeno , Lampedoria de cristal , Ao menino deus em metáfer de doce , Falando com Deus , A morte do Conde de Castelo Melhor .
