Jerry Abershawe
Jerry Abershawe (actually Louis Jeremiah Abershawe ; * 1773 in Kingston upon Thames , † August 3, 1795 in Kennington ) was an English mugger .
At the age of 17 his criminal career began as the leader of a band of robbers whose main field of activity was the road between London and Portsmouth , where he stole wallets and valuables from travelers at gunpoint. Abershawe was arrested in a London Whorehouse, sentenced to death in Croydon and hanged in Kennington at the age of 22 . As the last of his guild, his body was hung up at his old place of work in Wimbledon as a deterrent to others.
Around 80 years after the event, Robert Louis Stevenson tried a novella about Jerry Abershawe, but rejected the approach again.
