Jerzy Tabeau (born December 18, 1918 in Zabłotów ; † May 11, 2002 ) was a Polish doctor. His report, which he published after his escape from the Auschwitz concentration camp , is one of the first known reports of the genocide that took place there .

Life

Tabeau was a member of the military underground organization Związek Organizacji Wojskowej (ZOW) . After his arrest by the Gestapo , he was taken to Auschwitz on March 26, 1942 under a false name that he had already used underground. Together with another Polish inmate, Roman Cieliczko , he managed to escape in November 1943. After 1945 he lived in Krakow as a cardiologist.

The Polish Major's Report

After his escape, Tabeau prepared a report on what was going on in the concentration camp. In partly drastic descriptions, this contains information about the living conditions in the camp. The first two chapters provide information about the transports and Tabeau's first days in the camp. There follows a chapter on the Jews and another on the executed executions. In addition, he receives information on the development of the camp and the internal organization, for example the use of different colored fabric triangles to group the prisoners. Tabeau also reports on the prisoners' everyday life. His account of the factory murder of Jews from all over Europe became part of the Auschwitz protocols .

The report also contains details about the beginning of the mass murders and the selection of the deportees:

"At the same time, mass executions started in AUSCHWITZ (middle of May 1942)."

"At the same time, the mass executions began in AUSCHWITZ (mid-May 1942)."

It says about the gas chambers:

“For this purpose, special gassing barrack [sic!] Has been built there. [...] Inside they were equipped so as to create the impression of bathing establishments. "

“Special gas barracks were built for this purpose. [...] Inside they were equipped in such a way as to give the impression that they were washing facilities. "

Tabeau also gives an estimate of the number of Jews murdered before he fled. He speaks of "about 1 1/2 million".
