Jesse Waugh (born May 6, 1974 in Berkeley , California ) is an American artist who works in the fields of painting, film, writing and music. His short film El Angel was screened at the fifth LA Freewaves Festival, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles . In addition, his work has been shown on television and other media.

Artistic career

In the early 1990s he studied at Los Angeles City College , Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College and the City College of San Francisco. During his student days, Waugh began working with different media and combinations of different art forms. His film El Angel , shot in the style of an old silent film , documents the birth, climax and death of the city of Los Angeles with the message of how greed can corrupt art and commerce. The film was shown at the fifth LA Freewaves Festival in 1997. After graduating from San Francisco State University in 2000 and a subsequent time in Europe, returned to the United States Waugh back. Waugh participated in the University of Brighton's Master of Fine Arts exhibition in 2015.

Waugh's short films and his works of fine arts were used to illustrate didactic projects. He created so-called "artistic prisms" which were used as teaching material in the BBC documentary television series Rocket Science in 2009 . In 2012, his film about the Amazon rainforest was used in episode 1 of the Access 360 ° World Heritage series on the National Geographic Channel. One of his paintings, a replica of a painting by Martin Johnson Heade , was used as the book cover for Lauren Walden Rabb's novel The Rise and Fall of the Trevor Whitney Gallery .

Conceptual style

In his art, Waugh refers to the term “pulchrism”, derived from the Latin pulcher (beautiful), which goes back to The Athenaeum and the diaries of John Barton to describe his work. He defines the term as an art theory that aims to "idealize beauty for the purpose of art". This "pulchrism", as Waugh calls it, stands in contrast to the Stuckist movement and the "celebration of the ugly" which he believes was propagated in Anglo-American modernism .
