Jessica Hyun-Ju Ho (born December 17, 1988 in New York ), also known as Jessi , is a Korean-American rapper, singer and songwriter based in South Korea.

Life

Jessi was born in New York and grew up in New Jersey. She attended the Korea Kent Foreign School with Girls' Generation members Tiffany and Jessica Jung . Former CSJH The Grace member and current solo singer Stephanie Kim attended the same school. Jessi successfully completed the SM audition at the same company that her three classmates were under. However, she decided not to become part of the label as she felt that the approach to music did not suit her style. Before Jessi temporarily left the music industry, she made an effort to get used to Korean culture. She didn't have instant success after her debut and sometimes had to sleep in saunas when she didn't have enough money to pay for a place to stay.

Career

In 2003, Jessi successfully participated in a casting for Doremi Media and moved to South Korea at the age of 15. She released her debut album "Get Up" in 2005 and appeared on the TV program Music Bank with the theme song "Get Up". In 2006 she was featured by the hip-hop group Uptown in their album Testimony, replacing their original singer Yoon Mi-rae. Jessi's second album entitled "The Rebirth" was released in January 2009. After its release, she took a break from music and left Korea to return to America.

From January to March 2015, Jessi was part of the first season of Unpretty Rapstar, an offshoot of the Show Me The Money program. On September 15th she released her first solo rap single "Ssenunni".

In 2016, Jessi was a permanent member of the first season of the popular Korean variety show "Sister's Slam Dunk". In 2017 Jessi released another rap single, "Gucci", from her first mini-album titled "Un2verse", both of which were released on July 13th.

Her contract with YMC Entertainment ended in October 2018 and in January 2019 she signed a contract with the PSY record label P Nation together with HyunA and DAWN.
