Jessica Pimentel

Jessica Pimentel (born September 20, 1982 ) is an American actress and singer.

Life

Pimentel was born in Brooklyn , New York City . Her parents are originally from La Romana in the Dominican Republic , but immigrated to New York City when they were young. They divorced when Pimentel was six years old.

Pimentel went to New York City High School of Performing Arts , where she learned the violin. After graduating, however, she concentrated on acting.

She has been in a relationship with Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake since 2013 . She was raised Christian, but is a practicing Buddhist.

Acting career

After a few minor acting roles, Pimentel starred in the 2008 film The Law of Honor . In 2014 she appeared in four episodes of the television series Person of Interest .

Pimentel gained greater fame from 2013 in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black , where she was initially cast as Maria Ruiz as a supporting role until the fourth season and served as the main character from the fifth to the seventh season.

Music career

In addition to the violin, Pimentel also learned to play guitar, electric bass, drums and piano. As a teenager, she joined several New York heavy metal bands. From 2010 to 2014 she was the bass player in the New York band Desolate.

Since 2010 she has been the singer and guitarist of the New York-based heavy metal band Alekhine's Gun .
