It was built between November 1593 and 1600 by the Jesuit order next to the building of the older University of Malta , in which the Jesuit college Collegium Melitense was first housed. The church was renovated in Baroque style by Francesco Buonamici after an explosion in 1634 largely destroyed this part of Valletta. When the Jesuits were expelled from Malta by the Grand Master of the Order of Malta Manuel Pinto de Fonseca in 1768, the building became the property of the Knights of Malta and continued to be used by them as a church. The University of Malta was re-established in 1769.

The interior of the church is structured in a Doric order . Like many Jesuit churches, the floor plan follows the Il Gesù church in Rome. The early baroque facade appears incomplete.
