Yevgeny Jefimowitsch Tschertowski ( Russian Евгений Ефимович Чертовский , born February 15, 1902 in Ligovo near Saint Petersburg , † 1961 ) was a Soviet engineer and inventor .
Life
As an engineer, he worked at the aviation medicine institute in what was then Leningrad. He was involved in the Soviet program for a first stratospheric balloon , the Ossoawiachim-1 , in the 1930s . In 1931 he designed the first, as yet impractical, pressure suit in Saint Petersburg .
Just four years later in 1934, the Americans Wiley Post and Russell S. Colley of the Goodrich Corporation developed the first practical pressure suit. On September 5, 1934, Post reached an altitude of 40,000 feet over Chicago . This enabled him to fly in the jet stream.
