Jewish Publication Society

The Jewish Publication Society (JPS) is the oldest non-denominational, non-profit publishing house specializing in Jewish literature in the United States and one of the leading in the Anglo-American- speaking world. It was founded in 1888 by Jewish intellectuals in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Supporters were u. a. Jakob Heinrich Schiff and Meyer Guggenheim . The publishing house brought out numerous historical and philosophical works a. a. also a translation of the Tanach, which has sold millions of times . Personalities such as Henrietta Szold and Chaim Potok ran the publishing house.

It is currently headed by Rabbi Barry L. Schwartz . Since 2012 JPC has been cooperating with the University of Nebraska Press , which is now responsible for production and sales.

Renowned older authors at JPS include a. Samuel Agnon , Martin Buber , Louis Ginzberg , Yitz Greenberg , David Hartman , Abraham Joshua Heschel , Mordechai M. Kaplan , Jizchok Leib Perez , Chaim Potok, Nahum Sarna , Solomon Schechter , Lawrence Schiffman , Gershom Scholem , Joseph Ber Soloveitchik , Elie Wiesel and Zvivah Zornberg .

Awards

The publisher's books have received multiple awards, including the National Jewish Book Award , the American Library Association's Notable Book of the Year Award, and the Association of Librarians' Book of the Year Award .
