Louis Ginzberg

Louis Ginzberg (born November 28, 1873 in Kovno , Russian Empire , † November 11, 1953 in New York ) was a leading conservative Jewish scholar in the United States .

Life

He studied in Berlin , Strasbourg and Heidelberg and was awarded a Dr. phil. doctorate and went to the USA in 1899. Ginzberg was an employee of the Jewish Encyclopedia and from 1902 professor of Talmud and rabbinical science at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He taught there for over fifty years and wrote hundreds of books on Talmudic and rabbinic subjects throughout his life.

He was also the chairman of the American Academy for Jewish Learning.
