Jiří Smutný (composer)

Jiří Smutný (born April 1, 1932 in Prague ) is a Czech composer , conductor and music teacher .

Smutný studied conducting with Václav Smetáček and Robert Brock and composition with Karel Janeček and Emil Hlobil at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) . After a year as a répétiteur at the AMU, he was a répétiteur at the National Theater in Prague from 1956 to 1978 . From 1980 he was a teacher of music theory and conductor of the orchestra of the music school in Voršilska in Prague. From 1996 to 2012 he was professor for harmony , counterpoint and musical form theory at the Pablo Neruda High School . In addition to four operas , Smutný u. a. a bass clarinet concerto, a flute and a harpsichord concerto, a sinfonietta for piano and orchestra, a requiem and other vocal works, chamber music and works for solo instruments.
