JiffyDOS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JiffyDOS is a serial fast charging system from Creative Micro Designs , which was developed in 1985 and accelerates the charging process with the combination C64 / 1541 by a factor of 6 to 10. It is a fast floppy loader and contains command extensions for the VC1541 floppy disk drive.

technology

JiffyDOS must be built into both the floppy and the C64. It is a second type of speeder. Installation is relatively simple, but a hole must be drilled in each device to accommodate a switch. This switch enables you to switch to the old operating system. This is already burned on the EPROM . This makes the system 100% compatible. The optimal operating system is built into the hardware for every device. The acceleration is good for a serial speeder, when loading the VC1541 is 10 times faster, saving only takes about a third of the time. Similar values result when formatting and validating a floppy disk.

JiffyDOS also includes a number of additional functions. Not only are the function keys pre-assigned and all floppy commands can be accessed without the OPEN and CLOSE instructions. Different drives can be reached easily, basic and ASCII files can be listed directly from the diskette and files can be copied. Furthermore, JiffyDOS is the only speeder to support the hard disk from Creative Micro Designs and does not interfere with GEOS operation in any way.

Supported hardware

Over the years JiffyDOS was further developed up to version 6.01 in 1989.
