Jigginstown Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile an tSigínigh ) is the ruin of a 17th century country house in Naas in County Kildare, Ireland . The remains of the house are considered a national monument . It is on the outskirts of the Pale in the suburbs of Dublin . The building used to be known as Sigginstown Castle .

history

Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , was the construction of the house in the late 1630s-years during the reign of the English King I. Charles (1625-1649), begin. At the time, the proposed house was considered to be one of the tallest buildings in Ireland and the first to be constructed from red brick . The plans included floors and pillars in Kilkenny marble .

Lord Strafford wanted to provide appropriate accommodation for the king for his stays in Ireland. However, his fall and execution for treason in 1641 meant the house was never completed. It was destroyed in the civil war of the 1640s . According to Lord Strafford's biographer, Cicely Veronica Wedgwood , the foundations were still visible in the 1950s. The basement and remains of the ground floor are still preserved today.
