James William "Jim" Telfer (born March 17, 1940 in Pathhead , Midlothian ) is a former Scottish rugby union player and coach who was active for the Scottish national team and the British and Irish Lions . He played as number eight .
Telfer made his debut for Scotland against France in 1964 . By the end of his career in 1970, he made 25 international matches, in which he was mostly captain. He participated in two Lions tours, New Zealand in 1966 and South Africa in 1968 .
After his active time as a player, Telfer took over the coaching position for the Scottish national team in 1980 and led them to win the Grand Slam at the Five Nations in 1984 . With Ian McGeechan , he led the Lions to victory over South Africa in 1997. Especially his speeches to the strikers and the tough training sessions went down in history. Then- selection captain Martin Johnson later said Telfer's speeches made grown men cry.
