Jimaní is a provincial capital of the Dominican Republic on Hispaniola with over 5000 inhabitants (another 5000 in the catchment area). It is located in the southwest of the country on the border with Haiti and near Lake Enriquillo .

history

The village of Jimaní came into being after the Spanish-speaking east of the island of Hispaniola broke away from Haiti in 1844 and declared independent as the "Dominican Republic". There were many Haitians among those who settled there. The village grew because, thanks to its location on the border, it became a market place for cross-border trade.

In 1943 Jimaní received the status of a municipality . When the new province of Independencia was created with effect from January 1, 1950 , Jimaní became its capital.

In 2004 the Arroyo Blanco River, which had otherwise largely fallen dry, was devastated .

Economy and Transport

Jimaní is on the road that connects the two capitals of Hispaniola, Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo . As a result, the city is a busy border crossing. Many Haitians use the city's infrastructure as cross-border commuters, especially the health sector.
