The Rivière Soliette (in Haiti) or Arroyo Blanco (in the Dominican Republic ) is a not continuously water-bearing river in the southwest of Hispaniola . Other name variants are Rio Blanco, Rivière Soliette, Rio Solheillet, Riviere Soleillet, Riviere Soliette and Rivière Soleillet.

Hydrology

The river has its source in the Massif de la Selle in Haiti and flows northward into the Dominican Republic. At the town of Jimaní it changes the direction of the river to the east and finally flows into Lake Enriquillo .

The catchment area of ​​the river covers around 150 km² and ranges from a height of 2000 m above sea level at Sur de Vonds Verettes down to 40 m above sea level at the mouth of the river in Lake Enriquillo. The climate is tropical hot and dry; the average temperature is 28 ° C, the average annual rainfall is 750 mm in the entire river area, in regular periods of heavy rain up to 100 mm in 24 hours. The average flow rate is 0.2 m³ / s, but is subject to strong fluctuations from year to year and also within a year and can reach more than 500 m³ / s around once per decade.

Events

According to the International Red Cross, 393 residents of the city of Jimaní were killed in the flood disaster of May 24th and 25th, 2004, and another 274 were still missing two months after the disaster. This flood was caused by rainfalls lasting several days. Many of those affected were immigrants who had come from Haiti without official documents.
